We talk about brushing twice a day, for 2 minutes each session. But in order for brushing to be effective, you need to have an effective toothbrush. Here are some things to know about taking care of your brush.

First, your brush is yours, and only yours. Don’t ever share toothbrushes! Toothbrush sharing spreads bacteria, and can even spread disease and infection. If someone else uses your toothbrush, throw it away and get a new one. Additionally, try to store your toothbrush away from other toothbrushes. If you must store it near other toothbrushes, make sure the heads don’t touch. This can also spread bacteria that can harm teeth. Store toothbrushes in open air. Closed spaces encourage bacterial growth, which can reduce the effectiveness of your toothbrush. If you must store it in a closed space, for travel or other reasons, be sure to air it out as much as possible.

If you do need to replace your toothbrush because of contamination, don’t fret! There are many styles and colors available, even in adult styles. Be sure to get a soft-bristled toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This seal is given to product that have undergone and passed thorough testing for both safety and effectiveness. The Seal cannot be purchased; it must be earned. This guarantees you quality products for oral health. Toothbrushes need to be replaced every 3-4 months, even if the bristles look fine and the brush has not been contaminated.

Finally, be sure to support your brushing habit with consistent visits to your dentist.
